Which treatment?

When you are diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), information about the treatments available to you can sometimes be overwhelming. Having an open discussion with your healthcare professional (usually your neurologist or MS nurse) is the best way to decide which MS treatment is right for you.

You will probably have a number of important questions regarding treatment options. Going to your doctor with a list of set questions will help you to organize your thoughts and get the answers you need.

You may find it helpful to take a notebook with you. Going to your doctor to talk about possible treatments may be stressful and reduce your ability to remember what was said at the time. Making notes can help you obtain answers to most of the questions you will have. It will also allow you to digest the information when the appointment is over, at your own pace.

Below we have provided a list of questions that you may like to take with you when visiting your doctor to discuss treatment options.

What questions should I ask my doctor when considering treatment?

  1. What treatments are available for MS?
  2. How do they work?
  3. Do any of these treatments change how the condition progresses?
  4. In what other ways can MS treatments help?
  5. Why are some MS drug treatments given by injection?
  6. What trials have been done to support the use of MS treatments?
  7. What types of patients were in these trials? Were the results repeated in clinical practice?
  8. What are the most important things to think about when choosing an MS treatment?
  9. What are the long-term factors I should think about before deciding on a plan for managing my MS?
  10. What non-drug and therapist support is available?
  11. What has been the experience of patients on long-term treatments for MS?
